In fact, 92% of students who are very likely to recommend their Students’ Union are confident about their studies, compared to only 66% of those who are not. Moreover, when students feel that the SU effectively represents their academic interests, their overall satisfaction with their course and university increases significantly.

Some may wonder if Students’ Unions truly make a difference in students’ lives. Our evidence at Brighton suggests that they do. Students actively involved in SU-led extracurricular activities tend to achieve higher grades compared to their peers. While we can’t claim direct causation, research has consistently shown a positive impact of student engagement on academic performance.

Leadership positions in societies have been found to improve academic performance both in the short and long term. Furthermore, our statistical analysis demonstrates that society members perform better in their assessments compared to the general student population. Debunking the myth that students should focus solely on their academic coursework, we believe that engaging in extracurricular pursuits complements academic growth rather than hindering it.
