NATIONAL STUDENT SURVEY 2026

This report explores final-year undergraduate students’ views of their course and wider university experience, focusing on the findings most relevant to Brighton Students’ Union. It looks closely at Student Voice and how well Brighton Students’ Union represents students’ academic interests, alongside differences by school, course, campus and demographic group. Open-text feedback was also reviewed to identify key strengths and areas for improvement.

2025/26 BSU Survey

The 2025/26 BSU Survey gathered feedback from 506 University of Brighton City Campus students about their experiences of Brighton Students’ Union, university life and the issues that matter most to them. Students were very positive about the services and opportunities they had used, but many were less aware of what was available or how to get involved. The findings also highlighted the financial, academic and personal pressures students are managing, including the cost of living, assessment stress and mental wellbeing. The report shows the positive difference that taking part in union activities, societies, employment and representation can make to students’ friendships, confidence, wellbeing and sense of belonging.

Students’ Experiences of GEAR Processes

This Student Voice Leader focus group explored students’ understanding and experiences of University processes, including Extensions, Additional Consideration, Appeals, Complaints, Intermission and Late Penalties. Students were least clear about Appeals, Additional Consideration and Intermission, and often relied on staff or other students to understand their options. The findings highlighted the need for clearer guidance, better signposting and more consistent communication across courses and schools.

International Students’ Experiences of the University Application Process

This focus group explored international students’ experiences of applying to and preparing to study at the university in Brighton, including the CAS and visa stages. Students described difficulties finding clear information, inconsistent communication between departments and challenges navigating University systems. The findings highlight opportunities for clearer guidance, more joined-up communication and personalised support throughout the application journey.
