While poetry can be academic, society focuses on its social side, bringing people together to share experiences, foster friendships, and enjoy the creative arts. Events range from open mics nights
The Brighton Poetry Society is a vibrant, student-led community at the University of Brighton created to celebrate the power of words, self-expression, and connection. Poetry is a unique and powerful way to explore ideas, share experiences, and escape into creativity. Founded by students passionate about the craft, the society offers a welcoming, inclusive space for anyone interested in poetry—whether you’re a seasoned writer or a casual reader drawn to the rhythm of words.
We aim to build a close-knit, socially driven community. While poetry can be profoundly reflective and even academic, we’re leaning into the social aspect: our focus is on bringing people together to enjoy shared interests, foster new friendships, and celebrate the creative arts in a fun, laid-back environment. Expect plenty of engaging events, from informal readings and open mics to workshops, discussion groups, and social gatherings that sometimes (or often!) include a casual drink or two.
Why Join Us?
We created the Poetry Society to offer an escape and an outlet for creative expression, especially in a university setting where the pressure can be intense. Poetry provides a voice to those who want to share their thoughts or enjoy listening to others. Here, you’ll find a space to connect with people who find comfort, strength, and freedom in words.
Goals and Funding
To grow and enhance our activities, we seek funding to plan and host quality events. Initial funding provides a base for our activities, but to elevate our plans, we’re applying for additional funds to cover event costs and build meaningful collaborations. We’d love to establish connections with the English department or community organisations, such as creative partnerships.
How to Get Involved
The Poetry Society is open to everyone; no prior writing experience is required. Come along if you’re passionate about reading and writing or simply looking for a supportive group to join at university.
