Model United Nations (MUN) is a society designed to replicate the legitimate United Nations in New York City. In MUN, participants play an actor, whether that is an individual, an institution or commonly, a state recognized by the UN. The goal, through friendly, but competitive debate, is to work with other delegates to come to a resolution that upholds not only the international standard but other delegations. There is no clear cut win in Model UN, but the goal is to form a resolution that benefits your delegation and to get the resolution passed.
MUN deploys important and necessary effective communication, leadership and cooperation skills that are valuable to anyone but especially to those who want to work in a diplomatic or government position. MUN also develops policy making and policy paper skills as well as diplomatic approaches.
MUN is a debate society thus friendly and respectable, but competitive debates will occur both within society meetings and hopefully at formal conferences. Conferences are completely optional. It is an internationally recognized and valued group that would benefit your academics and resume. University of Brighton Model UN pledges to uphold a safe space free of discrimination, ultimately focusing on the well-being of our members as well as developing beneficial skills.
The society goal is to take part in some of the UK’s largest Model UN conferences. Specifically, we aim to attend some if not all of: LIMUN (in london) UCLMUN (UCL) LSEMUN (london) FWWMUN (london). Additionally, in order to prepare and invoke conferences within our delegates, we will have weekly, if not bi weekly, meetings to ensure that the rules and regulations of MUN are understood, you feel confident and as well as to conduct mock debates.
Will MUN and the skills we aim to achieve are rather serious in nature, we hope to create a work hard, play hard environment. As a society, we come together to support and push one another to put our best foot forward. Outside of the debate room, we aim to conduct bi weekly socials (every two weeks) to let loose and have some fun.
Given that we are nearing the end of this academic year, this society will properly launch the next academic year, beginning in October of 2025. We do aim to have a few introductory meetings within these last couple of months as we encourage you all to get excited about MUN society at the University of Brighton. By doing so, we aim to have a booth at Freshers Fair next year in order to spread the buzz about this society.
