Make sure before moving in that you have read through your contract carefully, this is a legally binding document and so you will want to know what is written in there. Below we have provided a checklist of things you need to consider or do when moving into a new property:

• Take photos of any damages or issues - this is so you can show what condition the accommodation was in when you began your tenancy, this could save you money down the line if your landlord tries to deduct any fees from your deposit.
• Go through your inventory – this is important, similarly to taking photos, you need to make sure this inventory is correct and if it isn’t you need to notify your landlord or estate agent of any differences. You should be provided with an inventory but if you are not then make your own. Set up your standing order for rent to the landlord or estate agent.
• Setting up Utilities – check the meter readings for gas, electric and water, if you are not sure where these are then your landlord or estate agent should be able to tell you. You can then submit the readings to the relevant companies, the landlord or estate agent should be able to tell you which companies are the current providers but you can also compare providers to choose what is best for you.
• Internet – Usually it is your responsibility to arrange internet, you can compare providers costs to decide what would be best for you, do bear in mind that you shouldn’t allow a provider to make any structural change to the property without the landlords permission first.
• Electoral Roll – remember to register to vote at your new address, you can do this on gov.uk.
• Insurance – your landlord will have house insurance but this will not cover your possessions, for this you may wish to purchase contents insurance.

You need to let the council know that you have moved in and confirm your student status with them. You can do this by getting your exemption certificate online at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/counciltax for Brighton and in Eastbourne give your landlord your university student number so they can submit them to the local council for checking against a shared database.

If you are a full time student then you are not liable to pay council tax, but be aware that if someone in your shared house is not a student then they will be liable to pay.

If you are going to be watching any live TV or BBC iPlayer then you need to purchase a TV Licence, otherwise you could be fined.
