The nominees have been announced for the 2024 Brighton Students' Union Awards. These awards celebrate all the hard work of our socieites, volunteers, student staff and University staff who have helped make student life better over the past academic year. The winners will be announced at the Brghton Students Union Awards ceremony on Friday 26th April and on our social media channels.

Inspirational & Motivational Teaching Award 

 

Alison Willows

Alison Willows is a great example of compassion and dedication in education. Her commitment goes beyond teaching, offering proactive support to students facing personal and financial challenges. Alison's thoughtful gestures are amazing, like providing special resources for dyslexic students and stocking her desk with special snacks to ensure no student is left behind. She inspires and supports students to thrive academically and personally. 

Gemma Graham 

Gemma Graham epitomises inspirational teaching, captivating students with her enthusiasm and unwavering support. Her engaging presentations at Open Days persuade prospective students to choose Brighton, while her dynamic teaching style sparks lively classroom discussions. Gemma fosters community and belonging, offering personalised support beyond the lecture room. Her kindness and commitment make her a valuable asset and a deserving nominee. 

Kate Turnough 

Kate Turnough shines as a guiding force in paramedic science, despite being new to the school. She deeply influences students, enhancing the learning experience for all. Kate's dedication to nurturing future paramedics is evident in her commitment to each student's potential. Her inclusive teaching accommodates diverse learning styles, fostering engaging and enjoyable learning. Kate's kindness, empathy, and unwavering support make her an invaluable asset to the university community. 

Tilly Paz 

Tilly Paz is a dynamic force, filling her teaching with infectious enthusiasm and a sincere desire to empower students. Through innovative methods, Tilly creates curiosity and deep critical thinking. She responds to feedback quickly to make things even better. Tilly's teaching inspires the students she teaches.

 

Outstanding Support Award 

 

Alex Fitch 

Alex Fitch consistently ensures student success and well-being. His knowledge and willingness to share insights improve the university community. Whether giving feedback or enhancing presentations, Alex's steadfast support profoundly impacts students. He has an unwavering commitment to student success and always goes further than needed. 

Elizabeth Morris 

Elizabeth Morris shows complete dedication and compassion in her role as a supporter of students. Liz's willingness to lend a helping hand and provide guidance has been instrumental in assisting so many students as they navigate the challenges of new courses and modules, especially within unfamiliar environments. She genuinely cares about all her students. 

Helen Abrahams   

Helen Abrahams is just so student focused. During the cost of living crisis, Helen supports students facing the worst financial hardships with tireless money advice and assistance. The proactive money advice weeks help students with budgeting, and BSU see first hand the care she treats all applications for hardship support, under really challenging circumstances. 

Ruth Muinde

Ruth Munde is a beacon of support during the tough times, known for her kindness, compassion, professionalism, and efficiency. She champions students facing difficult situations and embodies allyship. She had a tireless commitment to student welfare and success, deserving acknowledgment and praise.

 

High Quality Assessment & Feedback Award 

 

Chantal Frindall

Chantal Frindall epitomises assessment and feedback excellence, evidenced by numerous nominations for the High Quality Assessment and Feedback Award. Praised for dedication, hard work, and thoroughness, Chantal consistently provides valuable feedback across assignments. She goes above and beyond, offering precise and detailed feedback during sessions and on assignments. 

Angelo Pernetta 

Angelo Pernetta demonstrates unwavering commitment and leadership in feedback processes within the School of Applied Sciences. As Associate Dean (Education & Student Experience), Angelo prioritizes elevating feedback quality and timeliness, empowering students to learn effectively and foster continuous improvement. His dedication enhances student learning experiences, making him a deserving candidate. 

Peter Bush 

Peter Bush goes above and beyond to help students achieve their potential. His dedication and work ethic are exemplary. Peter provides insightful feedback and is readily available for additional feedback and support so that his students can do even better next time.

 

Excellence in Collaboration and Partnership with Students Award 

 

Gemma Graham

Gemma Graham has more enthusiasm than two other lecturers put together, and this shows when she works alongside students. She fosters a collaborative environment empowering students to give honest and open views, and then does something about what they say. Gemma's leadership has led to impactful events, enhancing student engagement and satisfaction. This was even more challenging this year. Please don’t stop! 

Claire Jackson 

Claire Jackson's passion and commitment really stand out. She genuinely cares about all her students. Her commitment to working closely with students, even during challenges, sets a shining example for future nurses. She enhances student engagement through valuable initiatives and cares about what students think and feel. 

Rodrigo Lucena De Mello 

Rodrigo Lucena De Mello is proactive in his efforts to get more students engaged outside the curriculum as well. He has directly led to an increase in student participation in Students' Union activities, fostering representation and involvement. Rodrigo's support in organising events at Elm House strengthens a vibrant, inclusive community. Rodrigo's leadership and dedication to student involvement embody student-centered collaboration. 

Clare Griffiths 

Clare Griffiths is beyond just dedicated to enhancing student employability. Her drive and personal belief in entrepreneurship shine through, and she has helped BSU deliver key employability workshops for many student leaders. Clare's tailored initiatives for postgraduate students demonstrate her commitment to student empowerment and make her a deserving candidate for this award.

 

Course Rep of the Year 

 

Naomi Spence 

Naomi Spence demonstrates exceptional leadership both academically and in extracurricular activities. Only in her first year, Naomi already shows meticulous preparation, clear communication, and fair feedback practices as a Course Rep which have left a lasting impression. She's deeply involved in various activities, from EDI initiatives to national competitions, elevating the profile of her school and university. Naomi's proactive approach to feedback and inclusive representation embodies student leadership.

Sarah Hallows 

Sarah Hallows showcases remarkable dedication and resilience as a nursing student. Despite her demanding degree, Sarah excels as a Course Rep society committee member and Super Rep, balancing responsibilities with brilliance. Her commitment to student representation and support, alongside maintaining academic excellence, underscores her exceptional organisational skills and devotion to her peers.

Rory Wilson 

Rory Wilson is admired for his kindness, support, and commitment to inclusivity. His genuine friendship and assistance transcend cultural and age differences, benefiting fellow students. Rory's initiative in establishing a movie club enriches the student experience, showcasing his proactive efforts beyond the classroom.

Karmen Iessa

Karmen Iessa is celebrated for his unwavering dedication, outstanding leadership, and exemplary communication skills. Peers have highlighted his tireless efforts to support and represent them, with tangible improvements including exam clarity, placement timetabling, and coursework extensions.

 

Most Innovative Society  

 

Ecological Society

EcoSoc demonstrated creativity, dedication, and inclusivity this year. Through high-quality events like lab sessions and unique initiatives like "Snail Day," Working with both staff from the course and their society, members EcoSoc fostered engagement and community throughout their events. 

Jerma Society 

The Jerma Society redefines norms by focusing on an internet personality. Despite unconventional methods, it created a vibrant community around shared appreciation for Jerma's content. Through unique events, it sets itself apart, offering an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere at Brighton. 

Tabletop Games Society 

The society welcomes all seeking fun away from university stress. They host themed game nights where members meet new people and explore various games. Attendees from different societies join for relaxation and fun. The friendly committee contributes to the society's growth, attracting many new members. 

Anime & Magna Society

The Anime and Manga society provides a welcoming space for like-minded students to connect and form friendships. They hosted regular events where members gather to discuss and watch anime. The society promotes inclusivity and encourages cosplay, helping members come out of their shells. Growing in popularity, it showcases successful management of a niche yet inclusive society.

 

New Society of the Year 

 

Brighton Asian Society 

Brighton Asian Society (BAS) has been one of our fastest growing new societies this year. BAS hosted many cultural and fun events like the Diwali dinner and MASTI nights out. They have created a community for students to get involved with and to help first year students feel like they have a a special group of friends to make them feel more at home in Brighton. 

BSU Book Club 

BSU Book Club was created in the first semester of the year and the committee has put in an enormous amount of effort to make the society a success. Society members have a vast and diverse reading selections, catering to various preferences from classics to young adult fantasy. Social meetings spark lively literary debates, fostering intellectual engagement and camaraderie, leading to lasting friendships.  

Pub Appreciation Society 

After starting the society earlier this year, the Pub Appreciation Society is quickly becoming a vibrant community hub. With 30 members and still growing, they support local businesses and promote inclusivity through initiatives like "top 3 of the month" and collaborations with other societies.   

European Political Affairs Society

The European Political Affairs society offers a safe, inclusive space for discussing complex political issues openly and without fear. Regular events encourage frank conversations about world events, fostering critical thinking and respectful exchanges of viewpoints. The friendly committee has successfully established and grown the society, attracting numerous members in its inaugural year.

 

Society Event of the Year 

 

Bright Radio Society

Society Vision - Societyvision Song Contest, hosted by Bright Radio Society, is a standout nominee for Society Event of the Year. They created a collaboration with several BSU societies to host an event that showcased the talents of members from different societies. Attendees' support created a warm, inclusive atmosphere, leading to new friendships and increased membership. The society did extensive organisation and promotion, including outreach at Freshers and Re-Freshers Fairs and on social media. 

Brighton & Sussex Sikh Society  

Langar on Campus – Langar on Campus was a remarkable event where students received free food and learned about Langar's significance in promoting charity and community. The society distributed meal parcels warmly, putting smiles on everyone's faces. The committee and society members worked hard to organise the event and it was a massive success and created a buzzing atmosphere in the Cockcroft courtyard. 

Islamic Society (Brighton) 

Charity Week Auction Gala Dinner – The Islamic Society's annual charity week culminated in a successful auction dinner, raising over £7000 for Mercy Relief, a UK-based charity aiding families in warzones and disaster areas. The week featured engaging events supporting this cause and the society auctioned off many amazing pieces of art created and donated by students and alumni.

 

Society of the Year 

 

E-Sports Society

he E-Sports Society deserves recognition for promoting community, teamwork, strategic thinking, and personal growth. Embracing diversity, it welcomes all backgrounds into competitive gaming. As e-sports gain global recognition, the society has worked hard to bring members all the up to date gaming information to get involved with tournaments.

LGBTQ+ Society

The LGBTQ+ Society is our biggest society this year with over 300 members. They have hosted a number of events that encourage inclusivity and friendship. They actively support the trans community and maintain strong online engagement despite challenges. The society's commitment to diversity and collaboration sets a model example worthy of recognition. 

Socialist Society 

The Socialist Society is dedicated to meaningful change on and off campus. Through education, discussion, and activism, they unite individuals around socialism and social justice. Involvement in student-led protests on various issues showcases their commitment to awareness and change. The Socialist Society empowers members to engage in impactful activism and dialogue, leaving a notable impact on campus and beyond. 

African, Caribbean Society (Brighton) 

The African Caribbean Society has made significant strides this year. With a dedicated committee, they've organised diverse events and collaborated with BSU to enhance society operations. Their initiatives focus on providing students with key skills through various activities and events, enriching the university experience.

 

Membership Services Student Staff Member of the Year 

 

Seb Koci-Edwards 

Seb Koci-Edwards is a dependable student staff member who has contributed significantly to various BSU events. Initially involved in GIAG events, Seb now supports BSU staff in numerous capacities, including hosting the bi-weekly quiz. Friendly and proactive, Seb is always eager to participate and contribute positively. 

Treverne Henry 

Treverne Henry is an exceptional and enthusiastic staff member. She spearheaded the revival of 'Raise and Give', a student fundraising initiative, and played a key role in ensuring the success of the bi-weekly quizzes at The Venue. These quizzes have become immensely popular this year, with students eagerly anticipating them every Tuesday at The Venue. 

Katherine Moore Osorio 

Katherine has proven great expertise as a Course Rep, Super Rep and most recently the Student Voice Associate in BSU. Her interest in improving the systems for student representation is very appreciated, as well as her speed and quality of work. She always brings in new ideas and works efficiently, as well as representing her School's priorities at a high-quality level. 

Marissa Burgess-Tasker 

Marissa has been an advocate for Disabled students' rights and has worked to ensure accessibility is embedded throughout her course and through University strategies. She has provided fantastic feedback to our team on how to work to be more inclusive for Disabled students and greatly informed our campaigns work. 

Naomi Spence

Naomi Spence, our Marketing and Communications content creator, is a standout nominee for the Membership Services Student Staff Member of the Year Award. She brings unwavering enthusiasm and dedication to content creation for BSU, crafting engaging material for our social media platforms. Naomi's commitment to showcasing the student experience is evident in her work, making her an invaluable asset to the team.

 

Commercial Services Student Staff Member of the Year 

 

Libby Oyetunde, The Venue 

Libby Oyetunde is a standout member of The Venue team. Her friendly demeanour and unwavering support uplift colleagues, fostering a positive work environment. She is always going the extra mile to help customers, and supports new and existing colleagues.

Mia Haywood, Basement Central

Mia Haywood is a vital member of the Basement Central Cafe team. As a supervisor, Mia embodies teamwork and support, ensuring smooth operations and assisting colleagues in any challenging situations. Her can do attitude inspires her colleagues, and is a shining light for customers.

Esme Cleaver, Art Shop 

Esme Cleaver always goes above and beyond for the Art Shop and its customers. She puts customers' needs first, and makes sure the shop can be open when students need it most. Esme's proactive customer service and welcoming smile create a positive shop atmosphere.
